Another 1971 classmate joins the worldwide search for a safe COVID-19 vaccine
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact people around the world, so does the quest to develop vaccines that are safe and effective in protecting individuals against the novel coronavirus. Johnson & Johnson is one of many companies hard at work on an investigational COVID-19 vaccine candidate—work that included recruiting adults of all ages and ethnicities for a Phase 3 clinical trial known as ENSEMBLE, which is now fully enrolled with approximately 45,000 participants.
Classmate Mary Kelly included the following in her annual Christmas card greeting. With her permission, I am sharing her news:
“I am please to report that I am participating in Johnson & Johnson’s clinical trial of their Covid vaccine.  Dr. (Richard) Greenberg is the Principle Investigator (Division of Infectious Diseases-at the  University of Kentucky Medical Center). This is the fourth clinical trial I have participated in under the direction of Dr. Greenberg. He has an excellent reputation. I received my injection on Tuesday, December 8.  It is a double-blind study so I don’t know if I got the placebo or the actual vaccine. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a single dose. I am excited to think that I am contributing to the eradication of COVID-19 worldwide! Doctor Greenberg has said he plans to unblind the study in the next couple weeks. At that time I will learn whether I got the placebo or the actual vaccine.”
Please take a moment to post a thank you to Mary Kelly for rolling up her sleeve to help this world-wide effort!
